Coping with Loss and Grief: A Family's Journey of Healing
I’ll never forget that cold February morning when I received a call that my mother had been placed in a psychiatric ward in Houston, Texas. My mind swirled as my sister conveyed the sad events that led to her hospitalization. It appeared that my mother was experiencing delusions and hallucinations, and since she lived alone, the changes in her behavior were not immediately apparent to us. Her diagnosis was Alzheimer’s, an irreversible, incurable, terminal disease.
We relocated her to California and as her health deteriorated, moved her into a private care facility that specialized in caring for individuals with Alzheimer's.
Days became months and then years, as we traveled through the pain of this terrible illness. And then one day, as I held her in my arms, I watched as she took her last breath.
This is the story of my mother’s end, but it is by no means only her story. There have been those before her and those who will come after whose bodies and minds will give way to the outgoing tide of diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Although I am aware this is true, I found comfort in knowing that life is but a breath and all too soon we will all lie down in the dust, but no matter the circumstance, God does not forget and is faithful to remember his promises to us.
“I am with you,” says the LORD Almighty. My Spirit remains among you, just as I promised … So do not be afraid.” - Haggai 2:4-5 NLT
Embracing Faith as a Source of Comfort and Hope

The Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:4 that there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.” It suggests that life is full of ups and downs and coming to terms with this truth is part of the journey of life.
Nevertheless, experiencing grief and loss is a complex and deeply personal experience that often leads individuals to question the role of God in their lives. In times of profound loss, people may grapple with their faith, seeking comfort and understanding in the context of their spiritual beliefs. For some, the experience of grief may strengthen their connection with God, providing a source of comfort and guidance as they navigate the emotional turmoil. Ultimately, the way one reconciles grief with their belief in God is a deeply personal process, shaping the individual's understanding of suffering, resilience, and the mysterious ways in which faith and sorrow intertwine.
Nonetheless, faith in God and His Word serves as a source of inner strength for many believers during times of mourning. Their faith enables them to find meaning and purpose even in the darkest of moments fostering a deep connection with something beyond the tangible and providing a spiritual sanctuary where refuge and renewal are found.
Embracing faith is not just about subscribing to a set of beliefs; it is a transformative journey that empowers individuals to navigate life's complexities with a profound sense of comfort and an unwavering hope for the future because no matter how dire the circumstances, a brighter tomorrow is possible.
As the weight of the loss of my mother settled over me like a heavy fog, I stood there, holding my mother’s lifeless body, feeling the chill of her now silent room. The journey of watching Alzheimer’s strip away her essence had been long and agonizing and now it was over. But amid my sorrow, a gentle realization began to root within me. The verse from Haggai whispered through the corridors of time, echoed in my mind like a comforting melody. “I am with you,” it declared, a promise that transcended the boundaries of life and death.
Amid grief, I found solace in the notion that my mother’s story, though marked by the shadows of Alzheimer’s was not just hers. It was a story shared by countless others, each grappling with the relentless advance of diseases that steal memories and erode identities. I felt a kinship with those who had walked similar paths and those who would inevitably tread them in the future.
The inescapability of my humanity hangs heavy, but so does the promise that God remains among us. In the delicate dance between grief and faith, I discovered a paradoxical peace. The ache of loss was undeniable, but so was the enduring presence of something greater – a presence that whispered, “So do not be afraid.”

Surround Yourself with Family and Friends
- Surrounding yourself with trusted family and friends can provide much-needed comfort and support. Participating in church services and seeking guidance from pastors and other ministers in the church is also beneficial.
- Allow yourself to feel and express your emotions. Grieving is a natural process, and it’s essential to acknowledge and process your feelings rather than suppressing them.
Create Experiences of Remembrance
- Consider participating in activities that were meaningful to your loved one like cooking a favorite meal, creating a throw blanket from their clothing, or planting a tree.
Join a Support Group
- Consider joining a grief support group within your church or community. Connecting with others who have experienced similar losses can be comforting and provide valuable insights.

- If needed, don’t hesitate to seek professional help from a counselor. Christian counselors, grounded in both psychological expertise and biblical principles, can provide valuable guidance in navigating the complexities of grief.
